June is Thyroid/Adrenal Health Month at HeartWise

1 in 13 people or approximately 2 million people in the United States suffer from some form of thyroid dysfunction. 80% of those people have hypothyroidism (an under functioning thyroid) and 20% have hyperthyroidism (an over active thyroid). Many of us equate a low functioning thyroid with weight gain, an inability to reduce weight, fatigue and depression or anxiety and most doctors focus and treat the thyroid as a separate entity and do not realize other factors that could be affecting it. Has your doctor ever talked to you about the possibility that your adrenals or neurotransmitters may also be malfunctioning?

The adrenals are small glands that sit on top of your kidneys. They are responsible for the production of many hormones including your “fight or flight” hormones. When the adrenals are under stress this can signal the thyroid to produce less TSH and therefore less T4 which causes the thyroid to become less active.

Neurotransmitters (i.e. serotonin, GABA, dopamine) are chemicals that transmit messages between our cells. They are responsible for every action our body performs whether movement or thought including how we react when under stress. Because of this, they play an intricate role with the HPT (Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Thyroid) Axis which in turn affects the adrenals or the HPA (Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Adrenal) Axis.

So in other words, if the neurotransmitters are off balance, chances are so are your adrenals and ultimately your thyroid. Thyroid dysfunction if not treated properly may eventually lead to heart disease, diabetes, and severe mental illness. If you suffer from thyroid dysfunction or even suspect you may, take advantage this month of our specialized testing for your adrenals and neurotransmitters and get the whole picture.

April & May are Digestive Health Months at HeartWise

Many of us live every day with some form of gas, bloating, diarrhea, constipation or abdominal discomfort and think “Oh, it’s normal” or “I’ll just take some medication and it will go away.” However, did you know that 70% of your immune system resides in your gut?

Think about it, if your digestive system is not running smoothly all the healthy food, supplements and even medications will not be absorbed at their most optimal level and therefore, your body will not be able to function at it’s most optimal level. This makes you a prime candidate for many diseases including allergies, IBD, eczema, autoimmune diseases, and cancer.

Because Dr. Elkin recognizes the importance of a healthy digestive system, HeartWise is featuring this month, Genova’s Comprehensive Stool Analysis and ALCAT’s Food Intolerance Test. And because we truly care about your foundational health, all digestive supplements are 10% off for the month of April only.
